Mozilla At #ICANN 50 Fellows Meeting - London

Apparently there have been so many issues in discussion regarding  Internet Governance, Development, Human Rights and Innovations as a way of finding measures of making the Internet an assert for the future generations. However this applies to activities as diverse as the coordination of technical standards, the operation of critical infrastructure, development, regulation, legislation and many more that comprises varied methodologies within the Internet ecosystem scope.

It was through the #ICANN 50 fellowship meeting where all this issues were addressed and discussed with an in-depth vigour to try solve problems and recommend best solutions that could benefit industries and the various partners, stakeholders and the major concerned party (End-Users). The Internet Corporation Assigned Name and Number is committed to seek, create a broader and more regionally diverse base of knowledgeable constituents by reaching out to the less developed regions of the world to build capacity within the ICANN MultiStakeholder Model. It was through the Fellowship program that i was selected to participate in this years ICANN 50th meeting held in London as a Mozilla Representative from Southern African Region. First, i must appreciate ICANN for the amazing opportunity they offered me to have access to such a high delegate meeting. I must believe that it is because of the desire, passion and commitment in advocating for an Open Web that landed me this opportunity to participate at this event. My role in the Internet space drives me to contribute to the development processes in discussion recently as a fellow alumni.

More than 2 years on issues of Internet Development there seize to be something really amazing and new for me in Mozilla. Actually there is always a new experience for me to remember, challenges and learning all this things together. In my experience as a Mozilla Rep one of the recurring things i have been trying to focus on has been Community Development through Open Source and sensitizing issues related to Internet Privacy which i believe brings in many aspects of the Internet ecosystem (net-mundal &Internet Security). No matter how many ways i decided to contribute but i decided to draw much of my focus on a few things..the urge and self drive to expand the mission of Mozilla within and around my local community and region and support current contributors whenever possible.

Back to the ICANN fellows meeting, well this was probably one of the best events i have ever attended as a Mozillian and as Rep or better still as an (Internet Enthusiast). Maybe i feel this way because i have really been yearning to attends such a high delegate meeting since my contribution to the Internet industry. As one of the worlds recognized event under the Internet Societies/ Internet Governing bodies, being part of it was just a dream come true, its of no doubt about that now.

British Pass-Uk Visa Info

Well then at least i was lucky enough to find myself not needing a Visa to enter into UK  (Smiling now, just reminiscing on how happy i was to believe how easier it sounded to find me having access to Britain without struggling for a Visa). I remember when i actually got depressed when some of my fellows got denied Visa so they could attend this meeting but i really learned a lot about traveling abroad ( Very strict Embasy policies and its not an easy one trust me) if you thinking of attending the 51 meeting in Los Angels get ready for the pinch again :) .

Journey Begins

My flight was scheduled on a Friday late morning from my country with my other flight connection at OR-Tambo Int Airport. Preparations for my first trip to Europe (England,London) were of great standard because of high expectations. This was one of the longer flights (11hrs 20min) to London Hethrow Int Airport with South African Airways (SAA). I landed in Heathrow the next morning after long hours of sitting on air. Right as i disembarked my flight i was lucky to be picked up by a family member so i didn't worry much about getting lost in such a huge airport to my hotel.

I spend most of my day one with relatives, walking around London and familiarizing myself with the meeting venues (quiet confusing) and the area around my hotel, that's after my checking at my room. After long walking hours and socializing, i went back to the hotel for dinner and to get a nap, getting ready for my first meeting the following morning at Hilton Hotel which was almost 10 min walk away from my hotel ( quiet a good walk in a fresh morning summer).

Fellowship Meetings and Sessions

Day two started quite early with breakfast at 6am and then we’d proceed to Hilton Hotel by 7am. This was definitely going to be quite a busy day as we were to go learn about the core business of being at ICANN (Welcome Fellowship Session) . So it all begun with introductions on what to expect from there henceforth. Keynotes from the main hosts and organizers followed. We also got to hear from the space wranglers and session hosts just as a buildup and for us to know where each and every session was going to be conducted.

All sessions were so amazing but having to decide on which one to attend as a newbie was a big challenge in fact the sessions were all tempting though multitasking was absolutely impossible, so the advice was take is slow and digest. My most favorite sessions were DNSSEC Workshop,Welcome Ceremony, Fellowship morning/evening meeting, NextGen@ICANN, ISP & connectivity, DNS Risk Assessments , Tech Day, Civil Society in ICANN & Internet Governance, Internet Government Session;  the reason being that this is my area of expertise and what really engrossed my attention during my welcome. Oh! :) did i mention the "Fellowship sessions" where we got to learn more of the things we didn't understand all day or previously, all pending questions were addressed in more depth. This was one of the interesting sessions yet very (Strict) it really taught me principles of "Time management" and focus on what business you come for at ICANN.

Mozilla Space London

One of the goals of my trip to London was to get to see the Mozilla London space. I got to the Office at around 11AM after some good long walk from Buckingham Palace . I got a warm welcome from everyone at the office and it was good to meet Zack who happened to be my host for the day, having lunch together and taking me through the various sections of the space. The space is quite small, but it has an interesting story behind it. The office has a small meeting area where they host events such as hack-thorns and meetings on Air Mozilla.  I was suppose to meet with Sarah and William as my host unfortunately they happened to be out of office but Zack went fourth and took care of my presence. One of the key interesting issues we touched on was the state of the movement (Mozilla Botswana Community), its current developments and challenges. We talked more about various projects such as Firefox 0S which is still at an infant stage in my country and the most diverse project (Web-makers) and how it is developing in the country. I really enjoyed my entire day at the space and charting more on insightful issues affecting Southern Africa as far as Mozilla in concerned.

Finally Done & Getting Back Home

After a long week of learning, networking, sight seeing, my trip to London has come to an end. I must say, I enjoyed every moment of it, yes even though I was lost most of the time. Being in London helped me understand what its like to be a tourist.Traveling around London wasn't that challenging I must say, London has one of the well organized transport systems in the world. I always had my maps and a guide book everywhere I went, but even then, i was able to navigate the complex subway system.

Did i tell you about the wired so called "Summer" in London, actually they have long days and short nights. I cant believe i missed my evening flight traveling back home due to this weather. :) :D.

Firefox Launch Party - Mozilla Botswana

Mozilla Representative - Opening Remarks
Firefox 29 has been released on the 29th of April by Mozilla and it’s gaining a market quite a wave of appreciation among Firefox users. Firefox 29 comes with a new interface called "Australis" that features rounded tabs, along with a menu icon in the top right corner. As you might imagine,Doing Good is part of our code therefore Mozilla is committed to making the Web look better for every user. There are a lot of minor tweaks that come with Firefox 29, but the most prominent additions include a new grid-style menu and a Customize Mode.

In support of this global launch, Mozilla Botswana also joined the launch and hosted a party for it's community. However this event gathered lots of passionate open source activists, Developers, Entrepreneurs and to name a few students from all universities across the city.  The launch party composed of many activities related to our community activities, though not limited to the above we also share insights about Firefox OS, Webmakers and Localization

The event started at a very high note with just everyone keen and happy to hear the great news about the latest Firefox. As people didn't want to be left out with the current technology updates, some updated their browsers right away at our booth table.  Throughout the event, we had interactive sessions were participants received Mozilla hampers as token of appreciation for their participation.

Giving out a rapid exposure of Mozilla projects happening in Botswana, Olebile Ditshweu gave an overview of Localization project which our community is currently involved into. However without wasting any time Segolo Machai and Kealeboga Malejane gave their presentations as well on Web-makers and Firefox For Android simultaneously.

As this was a launch party, we did not just end our event so simple; rather Mozilla Botswana organized an interactive dinner session in the evening for folks who were able to secure their spot via a pre-registartion on Eventbrite. The main idea behind this session was to get to know each other both long term volunteers and upcoming volunteers and defining the level of interest for people to join our community. And finally as we wrapped up the closing of the launch party in the evening we all dispersed with lots of enthusiasm and zeal to interact on our upcoming hack-thorn.

Bridging The Gab, Imparting Web Literacy - Mozilla Tour Botswana

Mozilla exists to promote openness, innovation and opportunity on the Internet. The success of our mission depends on participation from people like you.The Mozilla Botswana community embarked on a Mozilla Tour Botswana last week by visiting universities and schools in various towns of Botswana such as Francistown, Maun and Kasane, in addition this tour was graced  by a group of passionate Mozilla Volunteers; Segolo MachaiKealeboga MalejaneOutule Obotseng and Olebile Ditshweu together with their Mozilla Rep Oarabile Mudongo

The main theme of this tour was Bridging The Gap, Imparting Web Literacy  and some of the supporting topics we covered were Firefox OS, App Maker, Localization and Firefox Student Ambassadors Program. As the theme of this tour has been stated above the core objectives of the entire trip are stated below:

Objectives/Desirable Outcomes

  • Sharing ideas and how to contribute to Mozilla projects and building active communities.
  • Recruit 100+ volunteers in each town to  get involved in L10n and Web-makers projects as our key projects we are currently involved with.
  • Initiate Firefox Student Ambassadors  in each town per University plus a representative to start FSA clubs in schools.

The tour started off when we traveled early morning on 2nd February to Francistown but before that he had a breakfast before we could hit the road. Usually the trip from the capital city (Gaborone) to the second city (Francistown) is almost 450km in approximately 5hrs: 00min by bus. As our bus was scheduled at 09:00am we all left the city and arrived at our first destination at around 14:00pm. Upon our arrival in Francistown, we all went to our hotel for check-in to settle up and get prepare for the first event the following morning thereafter we all went for dinner. You honestly couldn't stop admiring  the protruding town from afar and the scenic mountain that makes the city very popular with just friendly people everywhere and the scenic town.

As the day of arrival was wrapped up with a dinner that night was full of excitement. Talking about Mozilla stuff and sharing each others stories and how we can activate our community was the core discussion at the dinner table, nothing feels sweeter than this. The most favorite part of being part of this community is that you always feel the love of being a Mozillians when attending any of the Mozilla events, hearing from different people, their experiences in this movement, what they do as Mozillians and even what they do as individuals aside from contributing to Mozilla, We got to learn a lot from people during such moments. Day one ended with briefings on what the program was going to be like for the next day and what to expect for the rest of the days at Botho University - Francistown Campus.

DAY 1: Francistown - Botho University

Monday morning marked the 1st day of major event, the day opened with a pre-keynote address by a Mozilla Representative giving insights about the entire objectives of the visit on campus and Mozilla community, benefits and lastly products of Mozilla. There after the making begun, I had the opportunity to listen to other sessions like FSA, Localizing Firefox products offered by accompanying Mozillians. I also took some time to talking about the Reps program with various participants and making friends. What surprised us most was the courtesy displayed by Botho University management and the entire student body in welcoming us into their campus.
  •  Creating a standard
In order to teach the web, we realized we need a framework for what we’re teaching. The Webmaker site is also launching with a Web Literacy Standard, a framework that’s underpinning our work going forward. Developed alongside our community of education-minded Mozillians, the Web Literacy Standard is a map of competencies and skills covering everything from basic coding to knowledge about privacy and safety. These are competencies that Mozilla and our community of stakeholders believe are important to pay attention to when getting better at reading, writing and participating on the web.

  • Open Badge
The web has usurped the traditional idea of how we acquire an education, and we now have limitless pathways to self-driven knowledge and a seamless connection with other people who can help us learn. Open Badges is a concrete way of capturing and recognizing what we learn in all parts of our lives. We’re announcing the Badge Alliance at today’s Summit, to continue to grow the ecosystem, as the more organizations and employers who participate, the more robust this system will become.

Wrapping up the day at Botho University campus in Francistown, we made lots of interactions with participants, exchanging contacts. Though is wasnt that easy to say good bye to multitudes who participated at this event, we just couldn't let them go without giving them Mozilla Swag to ace up their feelings to be a Mozillians. The event ended up on a high note, everyone happy and zealious to continue the task we left with them.

DAY 2: Maun - Botho University

On a diver note just a day after a well organized event in Francistown, the tour continued to Maun to our second venue were people where ignited and happy to receive the good new about Mozilla visiting their campus. This is a very unique place with just lots of scenic things to see, however the welcoming atmosphere was of no doubt that our event was going to be a fantastic one. Though the bus arrived a bit late evening we disembarked and walked a kilometer to our hotel for a check in as usual. We then set for dinner at Maun Lodge, one of the most popular resorts in the area, where we set and discussed on the agenda of the following day. The meals were just as scrumptious as you could imagine, a very friendly waiter serving us kept a smile on our faces during our meals.

The following morning was a beautiful day, very energetic and optimistic, as planned we wanted to visit two schools (a high school and a university) in this area and unfortunately we were denied entry at the high school as the headmaster did not seem to be in good boats with the mission of our program for students.Rather that did not demoralize us either-way we all went for a visit to Botho University-Maun campus for preparations were the center manager welcomed us vividly in his campus, our event was scheduled to take place in the afternoon and surprisingly students were already waiting patiently for our arrival.Something amazing, there was good turn up as well, vibrant participants payed so much attention to our presentations and asked questions which was a lot more engaging.

As the event ended we had time to interact with people and share  Mozilla mission on a personal level. It wasn't that easy to just say good by to participants as normally there is some sense of sadness whenever people part ways after a long joyful day. We had to fly out the following day to Kasane early morning (09:00am) which meant us getting enough sleep to catch up well on time the following morning.  I must say this was the most amazing part of the journey because we were all flying instead of taking a bus, everyone was just elated; more to say very much happy to experience flying for first flyers.

DAY 3: Kasane - Chobe Community Junior School
Firefox Student Ambassadors are individuals who are passionate about Mozilla and raise awareness about the many benefits of Firefox and other Mozilla products and it is through this tour that we were led to go and evangelize Mozilla mission at Kasane. Our visit to this place was so unbelievable as to what we expected. The kids where just so amazing and vibrant to learn and ask what we got for them. I think we must admit that publicity is a very effective method of getting much recognition. People could not stop admiring our smart Firefox t-shirts as we were all stunning and looking great.

Our event at the last venue was hosted at Chobe Community Junior School were mostly our participants consisted of high school students (grade 9-10).  Our main challenge here was quiet unbearable because we had to change the level of facilitating our lesson in order to cater for this kids. Fortunately something came up, we offered them lessons on user experience on Firefox browser and Internet browsing using Firefox.

Apart from just having an all day making presentations and evangelizing on Friday, Saturday was set aside for an outing and interact with nature and discuss as well on our success and failures measures of the entire tour. Very relaxing and fruitful we were able to draw up the next plans for our community agenda. Learning from each others experiences of the tour was really encouraging to visualize on having a very active and committed community of Mozilla Botswana.

The following morning was set for our departure back to the capital city, everyone was just tired after a long week away home. The very interesting thing was that we were flying only for 2 hrs 00min which was very comforting to learn that our journey back home wont be that long.
